Scarf


Rectangular scarf approx 8.5" x 56" in natural colored, light weight (gauze) cotton; Embroidery decorates ends although one end is missing. Embroidery motif of small baskets of flowers repeated 4 across and 3 deep; in rose, blue, tan, and cream. Baskets, flower stems and edges highlighted with metal ribbon embroidery. Stitchery, color blend and use of flat metal thread makes the work appear to be Turkish work of the 18th c.; fair condition: several holes where backing has disintegrated; large tape stain in center

Purchased in Ragussa, Yugoslavia for $3.00; Similar pieces in good condition sold for $25 in 1933.
