"towel" fragment


Homespun linen in three embroidered panels joined w/ 0.5” natural colored lace strips; Space filling floral embroidery pattern in greens; pinks, cream and blue. Parts of the design are highlighted with metal threads; 19" x 6"; mounted; very good condition: some colors have run.

There are some similar to this in color and stitches from Southern Russia, 18th century; a "towel" is used decoratively in the household (a table cover) and in religious and holiday processions; it was also a gift of the bride to members of the groom's family to prove her skill in needlework.
