Green & Gold Damask reproduction. pineapple design, also known as the pomegranate and the flowering artichoke; introduced into italy in the 15th century from the east; artists of that time designed several variations )as seen in their paintings), but the opposing scroll bands joined with the crown is a typical italian renaissance pattern; this pattern, the pomegranate, found in many variations, probably came from ancient egypt; it most likely had some religious significance because we read in exodus 39, v.24: "and they made upon the hems of the robe pomegranates of blue and purple and scarlet and twined linen; and they made bells of pure gold and put bells between the pomegranates upon the hem of the robe." 25" x 19 1/4" unmounted; excellent condition.
