Dress

Burgundy cotton print dress with butcher linen duster around hem. Round neck with small 1/2” stand collar and straight sleeves. Colors still vibrant: red, burgundy, maroon, gold, green, black floral with a paisley insert CF Bodice and skirt both gathered into waistband; hook and eye center front closure. Generally good condition, except for abrasion at waistband.

Because the women’s day gowns were often austere due to the dirt and coal dust in the air, it was an outlet to wear very bright and colorful garments around the house. This was also a place to express the brilliance of former ethnic clothing colors from other lands that were left behind. It is rare to find house dresses since as they wore out, they were recycled as doll clothing and then rags for cleaning and dusting. This one is in particularly good condition.
