Walking suit

A black velvet walking suit. The long line jacket has elaborate flat braid designs of various widths. The floor length skirt consists of 15 gores with pleated underlays which are stitched down in varying lengths and decorated with satin covered buttons and matching flat braid. The full sleeves are beginning to have fullness at the sleeve head that will evolve into Leg O’Mutton sleeves. Built in is a white brocade vestee with pearl buttons, handmade buttonholes and a white silk lining. Six lines of cream cord create a chevron pattern on the collar of the jacket. A full-length silk taffeta petticoat is attached to a grosgrain ribbon waistband, and is edged by an 8" accordion pleated ruffle. Exterior is in perfect condition; interior lining is splitting. The silk bow tie was a detail added for an exhibition.

Vestees became a popular replacement for vests as women’s suits become popular. The vestee is built in and maintains a more controlled way to keep the vest perfectly fit and perfectly framed with the jjacket.
