Dress
Black silk 2-piece dress printed with pink flowers. Leg-of-mutton sleeves are joined at the elbow to a fitted 2-piece lower sleeve. A wide black silk ruffle broadens the shoulder beyond the gathered sleeve head and tapers to the pointed waist of the bodice. The back of the bodice has a small fish tail to rest on the modest bustle. The bodice seams all taper to the waist giving the illusion of a smaller waist. The bodice has a stand collar and there is a center front hook and eye closure. The skirt is gently gathered and pleated in the back to drape over the bustle. Very good condition. The exhibition used a gold buckle with a black onyx cameo of a Roman soldier as brooch at the neck with a black Chantilly lace jabot and a 1” cream lace trim wrapped around the neck.
During the end of the 19th Century was a time of female empowerment exemplified by the extremely broadened shoulders.
