Coverlet fragment


Brown & blue wool and cream linen overshot coverlet fragment; 20" x 16"; fair condition, several worn spots; four raw edges Paper stapled to piece notes; "portion of an overshot coverlet (one set of linen warp threads and 2 sets of filling threads, one of linen and one of wool); coverlets of this type were woven in most American homes in the later 18th century and to the middle of the 19th century; this one was made in Connecticut; this type of coverlet was brought here from the Rhine region of Germany, where they were woven in the 17th and 18th century.” Design very similar to "nine snowballs" in "A book of Handwoven Coverlets" by Hall
