Shawl fragment


Piece of paisley shawl showing typical paisley design and coloring; sample is 9" x 8.5" with no repeats; fiber is wool; yarn is single, spun; fabric is figured weave, complex, consisting primarily of a twill; made with a jacquard attachment on the loom; the contemporary name of paisley; design is structural, due to yarn type and arrangement, weaves, and variations; fabric is a piece of a paisley shawl, the only wrap worn by women at that time; the paisley shawl was an imitation of the cashmere shawls of india; the motif was name of stylized leaves and flowers in a small scale; mounted; fair condition: couple of places have worn through.
