Shawl fragment
Piece of paisley shawl on a dark background; sample is 12.5" by 6 1/4"; with no repeats; fiber is wool; yarns are single spun; fabric is a figured weave (rather than printed), complex with the basic weave a twill, and the contemporary name of paisley; made with a jacquard attachment on the loom which controlled the threads on the loom; color is applied through both fiber and yarn dyes; design is structural due to yarn type and arrangement, weave, and variations; this fabric was a piece of a paisley shawl, the only wrap worn by the women at that time; the paisley shawl is an imitation of the cashmere shawls of india; the motif was made of stylized leaves and flowers in small scale; mounted. Fair condition: design worn through in spots. Floating threads have been couched in place to stabilize.
