Shawl fragment


Piece of the paisley shawl which was in imitation of the cashmere shawl; the sample is 11" x 6" approx. With no repeats; the fiber is wool, the yarns are single spun; the fabric type is a figured weave, complex with the basic weave a twill, and the contemporary name of paisley; made with a jacquard loom attachment which controls the threads of the design; color is applied through the use of fiber and yarn dyes; the design is structural due to the yarn type and arrangment, and weaves and variations; this fabric was a piece of a paisley shawl, the only wrap worn by the women at that time; the paisley shawl was an imitation of the cashmere shawls of india; the motif was of stylized leaves and flowers in a small scale. Excellent condition: structurally sound, colors good; mounted.
