Shawl fragment


Piece of paisley shawl; 9" x 7 1/4", 2 paisley repeats, printed - one cream on red background and one red on cream background: wool; complex with the basic weave being twill; very lightweight; fair condition: parts are threadbare and have worn through. Design: printed in typical paisley motifs this fabric was a piece of a paisley shawl, the only wrap worn by women at that time; the paisley shawl was an imitation of the cashmere shawl produced in India; the motif was made of stylized flowers, leaves, and the paisley.
