UCONN HISTORICAL COSTUME & TEXTILE COLLECTION

1936

Coat

Black wool long formal coat with wide lapels of vibrant red silk velvet with gold floral motifs enhanced with turquoise beads. Part of Schiaparelli’s Autumn/Winter Collection from 1936.

Schiaparelli designed primarily hats, but she was one of the most famous fashion designers between the two world wars, rivaling Coco Chanel. She didn’t manage to stay with the new post world war II fashions and her house closed in 1954. Schiaparelli, along with Mainbocher were the main designers for the Duchess of Windsor after the Duke abdicated his throne in 1936 to marry American commoner Wallace Simpson.

Provenance:
Crow, Laura, Storrs, CT Purchased in NYC in an antique clothing store in the early 70s when there was a 40s revival in fashion. It had no label, but Professor Crow recognized Schiaparelli’s style. After research, she was able to affirm that it was Schiaparelli’s coat.

Construction Label:
